The annual support fee is the number everyone sees. It is rarely the number that matters.
Support decisions for SAP ASE, SAP IQ and Replication Server often come down to comparing invoices. But the invoice captures only part of what it costs to run a critical SAP Sybase estate. Internal engineering time, monitoring, incident handling, licensing administration, audit preparation and the economics of a long migration all draw on budgets, even when they never appear on a single line.
Record licence and maintenance charges, specialist support contracts, monitoring services and any separately billed engineering assistance. Then confirm exactly what each arrangement includes. Two quotes are only comparable if they cover the same scope, entitlements and response commitments.

Experienced administrators spend substantial time on patch evaluation, performance tuning, backup validation, troubleshooting, documentation and routine change. Include that effort in the model, along with the cost and difficulty of retaining scarce SAP Sybase skills. As experienced people retire or move on, the hidden cost of depending on a few individuals rises sharply.
Security reviews, audit preparation, vulnerability remediation, disaster recovery testing and incident response are part of the operating model, not exceptions to it. Represent them in the cost assessment based on actual effort, and avoid assigning speculative financial values to hypothetical incidents. A credible model persuades. An inflated one does not.
During modernisation, organisations usually pay for both the existing SAP Sybase estate and the replacement platform. Application testing, data reconciliation and parallel running all extend that overlap, and delays extend it further. Model overlap across realistic scenarios rather than the most optimistic one.

The best support decision is not automatically the cheapest annual quote. It is the arrangement that provides the coverage and expertise each system needs, with transparent costs and contractual flexibility appropriate to the transition.
